House Seats 91-95: Tight Primary Battles Shaping Up in Broward

August 13, 2010 - 6:00pm

House Seat 91: With Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, running for Senate, three Republicans, a Democrat and a TEA Party candidate are running for this seat in Broward and Palm Beach counties. David Maymon, an attorney who founded Advocate Home Care to work with patients recently discharged from the hospital, has put together an impressive campaign for the Republican nomination -- raising almost $165,000 in contributions, loaning the campaign $61,000 and spending more than $203,000. George Moraitis, an attorney who served as a naval officer, is also gunning for the Republican nod. Moraitis raised more than $89,000 and loaned his campaign $15,000. Having spent just less than $68,000, Moraitis had over $35,000 cash on hand at the end of July. While he raised more than $25,000 and has taken out more than $17,000 in loans, community activist and businessman Yomin Postelnik, who is also in the Republican race, has kept his powder dry with around $26,000 on hand at the end of July. While Maymon is the favorite, his two rivals have enough on hand to make the final weeks of the campaign interesting. The winner will take on Democratic candidate Barbara Anne Stern, an attorney and the daughter of lobbyist and political consultant Judy Stern, who had around $60,000 on hand at the end of July. John Perez is running as the TEA party candidate. Keep an eye on the Republican primary and the general election for this seat.

House Seat 92: There is a close battle in the Democratic primary for this seat representing parts of Broward County. Rep. Gwyn Clarke-Reed, D-Pompano Beach, faces a serious challenge from Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Justin Flippen. Clarke-Reed has the edge on finances but both camps have been holding back. She raised more than $48,000 and spent almost $20,000. Flippen raised more than $39,000 and has spent $18,000 so far for his campaign. With no Republican in the race, whoever wins the Democratic nomination will have an easy time in November -- meaning both Clarke-Reed and Flippen will spend what they have in the final weeks of the primary.

House Seat 93: Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, will represent parts of Broward County for two more years. He is the only candidate in the race.

House Seat 94: Representing parts of Broward County, Rep. Hazelle Rogers, D-Lauderhill, is in solid shape to win a second term. Having raised almost $56,000 and spent almost $24,000, Rogers should be able to survive a primary challenge from John Labriola. Labriola, who says he wants to restore Christian values to America, loaned his campaign $10,000. The winner will face a write-in opponent come November.

House Seat 95: Representing parts of Broward County, Rep. Jim Waldman, D-Coconut Creek, has not posted impressive fund-raising numbers. He pulled in more than $38,000 with more than $25,000 on hand at the end of July. Having said that, Waldman does not seem to need to dial that much for dollars. Waldman faces Republican candidate Scott Yardley in November. Waldman has to be considered a heavy favorite despite his less-than-spectacular fund-raising. Yardley raised more than $4,600 and spent almost $4,000 of that by the end of July.
