Hillary Clinton, Rand Paul Coming to Comic Books

June 9, 2015 - 9:15am

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., might not be joining the Avengers any time soon but they are the stars of new comic books as Bluewater Productions rolls out looks at the 2016 presidential candidates.

On Monday night, Bluewater released “Female Force: Hillary Clinton: The Road to the White House” which looks at the favorite for the Democratic nomination.

“As the country prepares itself for the 2016 presidential elections, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton decides to make a second attempt to become the nation's first female president,” Bluewater described the comic. “Can she run on her record? Her likability? And how will lingering questions about Benghazi and her email inform her choice?”

Darren Davis, the president and publisher of Bluewater, explained the logic behind the series of comics.

“Reluctant readers gravitate to comic books,” Davis said. “The dynamic art and narratives draw readers in. It’s my hope we reach kids, empowering them to become lifelong readers.

“I have guest taught in schools and found comic books to be an excellent way to reach children and young adults,” Davis added. “These informative and entertaining books should teach readers about the candidates. Comic books have grown up; they’re not just for kids anymore.”

Writer Michael Frizell found a good deal of drama in Clinton’s story while Joe Paradise managed the art. “She’s a fascinating person,” said Frizell. “As a writer, I am drawn to powerful personalities. At times, she can be divisive, which makes her fun to write.

“The research I needed to conduct was rigorous, as was the writing process,” Frizzell noted. “I needed to think like a storyteller and notate like a reporter. The storytelling aspects inherent in creative nonfiction make comic books about real people a challenge.”

Frizzell also teamed up with Paradise on “Political Power: Rand Paul” which was released back in April.

“Dr. Paul is a fascinating figure,” Frizzell said. “As a writer, I always want to craft stories about people who hold strong convictions. His ties to family give readers a glimpse at his character, and his often-controversial stances make him an interesting person to depict in graphic format.”

Bluewater has already done comics on other potential candidates, including Vice President Joe Biden and Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J. Comics on other potential candidates, including Florida Republicans former Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, are scheduled for later in the year.
