From her new perch on the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., announced her first subcommittee assignments under its umbrella.

Wilson said on Friday she would serve on the U.S. House Highways and Transit; Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials; and Water Resources and Environment subcommittees.

“I am honored to be a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, which will play a pivotal role in rebuilding our nation’s deteriorating infrastructure while simultaneously creating jobs and boosting our nation’s economy,” Wilson said. “I am especially pleased that this service also will provide many opportunities to help my district and the state of Florida grow stronger and more competitive.”

Wilson was named to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee last month by ranking Democrat U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon. Wilson has stressed that the new assignments would help her bring jobs to South Florida. In 2013, Wilson helped found and lead the Florida Ports Caucus.

Outside the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Wilson will continue her work on U.S. Education and the Workforce Committee and she announced on Friday that she will be joining its Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education.

Wilson’s office pointed to her background in education before entering political life as good qualifications for her new task.  “In this new assignment the congresswoman will be able to apply her considerable experience as an educator, school principal, and founder of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, a renowned in-school dropout prevention and mentoring program,” Wilson’s office noted.

Now 74, Wilson was first elected to Congress in 2010 after more than a decade serving in both chambers of the Florida Legislature. Representing parts of Broward County and Miami Dade, Wilson holds a seat which is generally considered secure for the Democrats.
