Florida Voices: Hanukkah

December 7, 2015 - 12:45pm

“Hanukkah is a special time to celebrate the history of the Jewish people and their devout faith. Even during times of unrest in our world, Israel has remained a light for people everywhere as a nation of hope. We stand with the nation of Israel and continue to ask for peace this Hanukkah season, here and around the world. May this special holiday be a celebration of faith and community. To our Jewish friends, Ann and I wish you a very Happy Hanukkah. Chag Sameach.”
--Gov. Rick Scott

“As our Jewish friends, neighbors, and loved ones in Florida and around the world prepare to light the menorah at sundown today, I would like to send warm greetings and best wishes for a joyful Hanukkah. During this eight-day celebration of the miraculous triumph of freedom over oppression, I hope the burning candles of this Festival of Lights will serve as a symbol of hope to all those around the world without the freedom to worship freely and openly.”
--U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

“Jewish families across South Florida and the world will gather to celebrate eight nights of Hanukkah, when we recall the bravery of the Maccabees who liberated the Jewish people from persecution and rededicated the holy Temple in Jerusalem. During this Jewish Festival of Lights, we celebrate miracles and blessings, while keeping in mind those still suffering at the hands of oppression. Wishing all a Hanukkah sameach, happy Hanukkah.”
--U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla.

“Tonight, like so many families around the world, I will gather with my family to celebrate the first night of Chanukah. As we retell the story of the great miracle that happened in Israel so many years ago, we are reminded of the power of the few against the many, and the power of faith and spirit in the face of oppression. We also celebrate the small miracles we experience every day, and pledge to always be a voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves. From my family to yours, have a happy Chanukah!”
--U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz
