Floridas universities need about $200 million in repairs.
For the 2013 legislative session, State University System Chancellor Frank Brogan has requested a quarter of that amount allocated through Public Education Capital Outlay (PECO) dollars, just so the state doesnt fall behind in maintenance for its campuses.
The amount is larger than that, but were trying to be realistic, Brogan said as he appeared before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education.
Were trying to keep up what weve got, not new buildings. Many are growing old and many by definition are old.
Among the proposed repairs:
Florida State University: upgrading the electrical system campus-wide; and replacing corroded walls on the Keene Building.
University of Central Florida: replacing the roof on the College of Science.
University of Florida: getting elevators to code in the Fine Arts D (Little Hall), Walker Hall and Norman Hall; and replacing deteriorating roofing on the Dental Science Building.
University of South Florida: replacing the roof on the Fine Arts Hall and the Life Sciences Building.
Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education Chairman Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, said too much is still up in the air about the states budget.
