Florida Strongly Represented on Team USA and Among World Athletes at Olympics

July 25, 2012 - 6:00pm

Florida will be well-represented when athletes from around the world make their way into Olympic Park in London for the opening of the 2012 Summer Games.

At least 92 athletes with Florida ties, of whom 51 will be suited up in the red, white and blue -- and we know we didn't catch everybody -- are in Britain for the Games. The Games began Wednesday with opening matches in womens soccer, in which University of Florida alumni Abby Wambach and Heather Mitts pace the U.S. team.

Meanwhile, Colombias women include Melissa Ortiz, a product of Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach and Lynn University.

The Gators will have additional representation at the Games as 230 members of the Pride of the Sunshine marching band -- paying about $4,000 each on top of $100,000 from the provosts office -- cross the pond to perform for the U.S. Embassy and at an event before the opening ceremonies.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater sent out a message that the athletes representing Team USA are examples off America exceptionalism.

As Americans we are known to be hard-working, and Team USA is no exception, Atwater stated. I am proud and excited to see 51 talented athletes from the great state of Florida joining the ranks of Team USA to represent our nation at the Olympics. I look forward to cheering loudly for our fellow Floridians and for every athlete who put in the time and effort it takes to compete at the highest level against the best athletes in the world.

Go Team USA!
