Dean Cannon Names 22 House Members to House Committee on Reorganization

February 10, 2011 - 6:00pm

House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, named 22 state representatives to the Select Committee on Government Reorganization on Friday.

Cannon had announced the formation of the committee, which will be looking at streamlining government as well as promoting economic growth, earlier in the month and named two members of his leadership team, Speaker Pro Tempore John Legg, R-Port Richey, and Rules Chairman Gary Aubuchon, R-Cape Coral, to lead the committee. Legg will be chairman of the committee while Aubuchon will serve as vice chairman.

The speaker named 14 fellow Republicans to the committee to join Legg and Aubuchon: Rep. Janet Adkins of Fernandina Beach, Rep. Ben Albritton of Bartow, Rep. Esteban Bovo of Hialeah, Rep. Richard Corcoran of New Port Richey, Rep. Chris Dorworth of Heathrow, Rep. Doug Holder of Sarasota, Rep. Mike Horner of Kissimmee, Rep. Matt Hudson of Naples, Rep. Clay Ingram of Pensacola, Rep. Debbie Mayfield of Vero Beach, Rep. Ken Roberson of Port Charlotte, Rep. Carlos Trujillo of Miami, Rep. John Wood of Haines City, and Rep. Dana Young of Tampa

There are also eight Democrats on the new committee: Rep. Leonard Bembry of Madison, Rep. Gwyn Clarke-Reed of Pompano Beach, Rep. Evan Jenne of Fort Lauderdale, Rep. John Patrick Julien of North Miami Beach, Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda of Tallahassee, Rep. Dwayne Taylor of Daytona Beach, Rep. Perry Thurston of Fort Lauderdale, and Rep. Alan Williams of Tallahassee.

Hudson, for one, said he was happy with his new assignment.

I am honored to have been appointed to such a prestigious select committee that will give me the opportunity to create transformational change for Florida, said Hudson. As a member of this committee, I will systematically pursue true reform and avoid the temptation to make changes simply for the sake of change. We cannot simply combine, recombine, divide or redivide government agencies. Instead, we need to engage in identifying the specific and necessary work of government to eliminate the extraneous tasks that have been added over the years. We need to make Florida a goal-oriented state that is business friendly.
