Craig Miller Expects John Mica-Sandy Adams Race

February 7, 2012 - 6:00pm

Though Adams is a freshman and Mica is a 10-term veteran and chairman of the House Transportation Committee, he might opt for neighboring CD 6, which runs northeast of Orlando to include Daytona Beach up to Flagler and St. Johns counties.

CD 6 contains about 70 percent of Mica's existing Orlando area district.

Craig Miller, a Republican businessman who recently dropped out of the U.S. Senate race, is the first and, so far, only GOP candidate to file for that district.

Reached by Sunshine State News in Ormond Beach, Miller said, "I didn't expect [Mica] would run here. I figured he would run in his home district in Winter Park, where he's lived for many, many years.

"Multiple sources -- people who are close to him, people who have donated to his campaigns -- have told me he'll run in District 7," Miller related.

Whichever way Mica goes, Miller says he's committed to running in CD 6.

Recalling that he carried Volusia County by a "nice margin" against Adams in his 2010 congressional bid, the former Ruth's Chris CEO said his longtime business dealings in CD 6's coastal communities make him a logical choice there.

Adams, who announced her intentions for CD 7 within hours of Miller announcing his intentions for CD 6, was not available for comment.
