Charlie Crist Goes Out With a Whimper

November 1, 2010 - 7:00pm

What a difference four years make.

Four years ago, Gov.-elect Charlie Crist was surrounded by thousands of people who packed his election night party.

On Tuesday, barely 150 somber souls gathered for his political wake at The Vinoy in St. Petersburg.

As one observer put it, "Tonight, he couldn't generate a crowd that would fill a Starbucks."

After a blowout loss to Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate race, the people had abandoned the self-styled "People's Governor," who will be out of a job come January.

In a concession "speech" that lasted barely a minute and a half, Crist's voice shook and his eyes were red.

Still, the Republican-turned-independent managed to maintain his trademark sunny optimism.

"It has been the greatest honor of my public life to serve as your governor," he said. "Its a tough night. But theres a bright future ahead.
