Having served on the Miami-Dade School Board before defeating then-U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia, D-Fla., to win a seat in Congress last year, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., expanded his role on education this week as he was named to two subcommittees under the U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee.
U.S. Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., the chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, named Curbelo to the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education and the Higher Education and Workforce Training subcommittees on Wednesday.
We have a lot to do over the next two years, Kline said on Wednesday. Our success will be due in no small part to the great work of our subcommittees. We have a dedicated team, and I look forward to working with each member as we advance common-sense reforms to strengthen our nations classrooms and workplaces.
On the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee, which covers early leaning through high school educational issues, Curbelo will serve under U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind., who chairs the subcommittee. U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., chairs the Higher Education and Workforce Training Subcommittee which has jurisdiction over education after high school including colleges, universities and training programs.
For his part, Curbelo said on Thursday he was glad to have the new assignments, insisting his background would be of great help.
These assignments will allow me to draw from my experience as a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board to address some of the challenges facing families in the 26th District and Florida, Curbelo said. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with my Education and the Workforce colleagues and Chairman Kline. I look forward to serving my constituents as we tackle important priorities including the improvement of our countrys K-12 and higher education system.
Curbelo is one of two members of the Florida delegation who sit on the House Education and the Workforce Committee. U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., is also on the committee and is the ranking Democrat on the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. Wilson also sits on the House Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee.
