Sewage Bills Create a Stink in the Brevard Delegation

April 8, 2019 - 9:00am
Raw sewage polluting a waterway

We aren't going to fix Florida's waterways until we stop loading them up with poop. Ask any biologist. Failing septic tanks and broken municipal sewer pipes have galvanized the state’s environmental discourse.

So, how come we're here now with less than three weeks left in the 2019 legislative session, yet we don't have a single piece of significant sewage-be-gone legislation anywhere near the finish line?

The simple answer: Dissension among legislators.

Trouble in River City, a.k.a. District 17 -- the wider Brevard County area.

Neither candidate excited the electorate, as witnessed by the anemic 20.55 percent primary turnout March 5. Voters traditionally go to the polls in far fewer numbers for the runoff.

A microscopic 9.86 percent of Tampa registered voters favored runaway leader Castor in the primary. She garnered 48 percent of the turnout against Straz and five other foes.

And after they were elected in November, he tapped former House Speaker Richard Corcoran to serve as education commissioner, then-Rep. Halsey Beshears to become secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, then-Rep. Danny Burgess to lead the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and then-Rep. Jared Moskowitz to direct the Division of Emergency Management.

April 6, 2019 - 8:00am

Florida’s Constitution is in the crosshairs.

A little more than two years ago, voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana. In November, nearly two-thirds of Floridians signed off on an amendment to restore the right to vote to certain felons who’ve completed their sentences.

Backers of both proposals maintain that the constitutional changes don’t require action from the Legislature.

April 6, 2019 - 8:00am
Scott Israel

In keeping with his pattern of defiance and reliance on recriminations, deposed Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel pledges to appeal a recent judge’s decision.

Following his suspension in early January by newly sworn-in Gov. Ron DeSantis, the sheriff had pledged to fight the decision. Holding his own press conference the same day, Israel declared the governor's decision had no merit, declaring it a political hit job.
