Lois Frankel Leads the Charge to Take Down a Trump Nominee at the State Department

From her perch on the U.S. House State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., is leading the charge on Capitol Hill to defeat a State Department nominee. 

Frankel teamed with three congresswomen from California -- Democrat U.S. Reps. Zoe Lofgren, Lucille Roybal-Allard and Norma Torres to round up 45 other members of the House to write U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, calling on him to “withdraw Ronald Mortensen’s nomination to be Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration.”

Senate Republicans Give Voucher Expansion a Big Day

Florida senators on Thursday passed legislation that would allow more students to use taxpayer-funded scholarships to pay for private-school tuition, a major step toward expanding school choice in the state.

Voting 23-17 along party lines, the Senate signed off on a wide-ranging education proposal that would also restructure a controversial teacher-bonus program, tweak other voucher-type scholarship programs and make it cheaper for teachers to get certified by the state.

Florida Cabinet: Past Time for Congress to Produce Hurricane Relief

Elected officials at the state level and legislators from North Florida called on Congress to pass a relief effort for people impacted by Hurricane Michael which slammed into the Panhandle and the Big Bend back in October.   

At a media event in Tallahassee on Thursday, members of the Florida Cabinet called for federal action. Last week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recategorized Hurricane Michael as a category 5 storm, moving it up from a category 4 storm.

Sen. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, has taken heat in recent weeks for sponsoring a bill targeting so-called “sanctuary cities” following extensive consultation with one hardline anti-immigration group, and reliance on “research” produced by another.

There is plenty wrong with this situation, including that these groups have a vision of immigration policy that runs directly opposed to bedrock conservative principles.
