Florida Still Key in Hunt for 270 Electoral Votes

July 27, 2016 - 10:45pm
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton

Ever since NBC's Tim Russert wrote "Florida Florida Florida" on a whiteboard during the tumultuous 2000 presidential election, the state has emerged as one of the most significant battlegrounds in the race for 270 electoral votes --- at least in popular imagination.

But in 2012, after President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney poured immense resources into Florida, the state was consigned to a footnote. Obama wasn't definitively declared the winner in Florida for a couple of days --- long after he had clinched re-election.

Publix Heiress Throws $800,000 Into Anti-Medical Marijuana Campaign

July 27, 2016 - 9:15pm

The heiress of Florida’s favorite grocery store, Publix, has dumped $800,000 into the campaign to fight medical marijuana, heating up an already intense battle over legalizing the drug in the Sunshine State.

State election records show Publix founders, the Carol Burnett Family Trust, donated $800,000 to Drug Free Florida earlier this month. Drug Free Florida is leading the charge to squash a constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana.

What Do You Think? Did Donald Trump Just Commit Treason?

July 27, 2016 - 2:00pm

Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Russia to hack Hillary Clinton's email.

"Russia, if you're listening I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press," Trump said during a news conference in Florida.

Shortly after his press conference event ended, Trump repeated his call on Twitter.

Debbie Mayfield and Jeff Brandes

On Tuesday, the Liberty First Network released its grades on how Florida legislators voted in 2015 and 2016.

“The biggest disappointments over the last two sessions include the failure to pass pro-gun bills and repealing red light cameras,” noted Alex Snitker of the Liberty First Network. “The fight also continues to eliminate Common Core from our education system. The good news is that we are making headway in those battles.

Secure our Homeland: Fix our Broken Immigration System

July 27, 2016 - 8:45am

A country without borders is not a country. We must fix our immigration system so we control who comes and goes and that starts by securing our southern border.

The Path Ahead for Clinton

July 27, 2016 - 7:00am

En route to fight one of his many duels, French politician Georges Clemenceau bought a one-way train ticket. Was he pessimistic? "Not at all. I always use my opponent's return ticket for the trip back." Some Hillary Clinton advisers, although not that serene, think her victory is probable and can be assured.

State Panel Backs Controversial Water Standards

July 26, 2016 - 10:00pm

A state regulatory panel Tuesday narrowly approved the first changes to Florida's surface-water quality standards in nearly a quarter-century, despite objections from environmentalists who argued the new criteria potentially create more health hazards.

The Environmental Regulation Commission, whose members are appointed by Gov. Rick Scott, voted 3-2 to support changes that increase the number of regulated chemicals allowed in waterways.

From Bad to Worse: Abuse Allegations and Endorsement Retractions Hound Alan Grayson

July 26, 2016 - 5:00pm
Alan Grayson

Is Alan Grayson having the worst day ever in Florida politics? On Tuesday, POLITICO released a story saying the Florida congressman had allegedly abused his wife for over two decades. Grayson’s wife, Lolita Grayson, told POLITICO she had called the police on her husband a total of four times -- at least two times in Virginia and two more times in Florida.

Martin County's Bad Attitude Toward Business Should Terrify Taxpayers

July 26, 2016 - 12:15pm

Martin County richly earns its reputation as the most business-unfriendly county in Florida.

Playing hardball and creating a hostile atmosphere for companies that show up to boost the economy has been going on for years in this Treasure Coast county where the motto is "Enjoy Our Good Nature."

I bring this up now because Martin's no-growth commission majority just pulled another fast one on a company, this one a genuine gift horse, and frankly it defies all sense of logic.

Doesn't anybody down there in paradise think about the taxpayers?
