Weekly Roundup: This is a Test

August 19, 2016 - 10:00pm

Whether it's the kind given to students in school or the kind that can detect a disease creeping into the state, tests helped drive the week in Florida.

Tests for Zika continued to provide more troublesome headlines for state officials --- and for the tourism industry that needs a flow of positive stories --- in the form of a second area where the virus is believed to have been transmitted by mosquitoes. That came even as a state economist suggested the fallout from the disease was already likely to take a bite out of state revenues.

The Price of Powerlessness

August 19, 2016 - 7:00am

This week Russian bombers flew out of Iranian air bases to attack rebel positions in Syria. The State Department pretended not to be surprised. It should be. It should be alarmed. Iran's intensely nationalistic revolutionary regime had never permitted foreign forces to operate from its soil. Until now.

August 18, 2016 - 10:30pm

The United States' big government is about to get bigger.

The U.S. Justice Department announced Thursday it has seen enough of private prisons, and will phase them out as soon as possible.

In a memo explaining the decision, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates wrote that private prisons “simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources,” “do not save substantially on costs,” and “do not maintain the same level of safety and security” as facilities operated by the Bureau of Prisons.
