Unemployment Rises to 11.7 Percent

The Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI) announced on Friday that the unemployment rate rose yet again in Florida. For August the rate stood at 11.7 percent, an increase from July when it stood at 11.5 percent. Out of a pool of 9,229,000 Floridians, 1,084,000 remain without a job. From April and June, the rate dropped down from all-time record highs, but is starting to go up again.

Florida Chamber of Commerce Endorses Rick Scott, Pam Bondi

Late Thursday the Florida Chamber of Commerce announced its endorsements in the gubernatorial and attorney general races -- backing Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott and attorney general hopeful Pam Bondi over their Democratic rivals.

Sen. George LeMieux, Statesman

If Republican George LeMieux is a lame duck in the U.S. Senate, he didn't get the message. Or, he got the message and decided, hey, what do I have to lose? I'm going to do the right thing.

LeMieux was one of two Republicans who broke with the party and cleared the way for Thursday's passage of a plan that's probably the best news small businesses have had in two years. The plan, if it clears the House, will make more tax breaks available and loosen up more credit for them.

High Court Gets Amendment 8 Appeal

Responding to a request by an appellate court, the Florida Supreme Court agreed Thursday to take up a dispute between the states largest teachers union and the Legislature, which have squared off over lawmakers attempt to relax class size restrictions passed by voters in 2002.
