"U" Football Coach Recruiter Should Take a Turn With This Edsall

Let the name dropping begin. As the University of Miami searches for a new head football coach, prospects are popping up from coast to coast.

While Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt would not divulge any names on his list Sunday, one deserves serious consideration: Randy Edsall.

The University of Connecticut coach will lead the Huskies to the Big East championship this year if they beat the University of South Florida on Saturday (something Randy Shannon could not do). Edsall also wins bowl games (which Shannon did not).

TSA Gropers Draw Tea Party Wrath; Unionizing Vote Next

Add "gate rape" to the bill of indictment that tea party activists are pressing against the Obama administration.

Florida TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party Chairman Peg Dunmire says the TSA's newest security measures violate the Fourth Amendment and will stoke anti-government sentiment heading into the 2012 election.

"This is not making us any safer, it is an illusion," Dunmire said of the full-body scans and enhanced pat-downs that rolled out this month at U.S. airports.

Miami Hurricanes Fire Randy Shannon

With championship expectations and mediocre results, the University of Miami unceremoniously fired Head Football Coach Randy Shannon Saturday night, hours after the Hurricanes finished a 7-5 regular season.

In a press release, Kirby Hocutt, 'Canes athletic director, said, "We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program. Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world."

This was a costly decision for the university. Earlier this year Shannon received a four-year contract extension.

But, guess what? Democrats were off the mark. On Nov. 2, in record numbers, Hispanic voters helped elect Republicans.

FSU Whips UF and Heads to ACC Championship Game

Florida State finally broke through against the University of Florida, and will celebrate its big win with a trip to the ACC championship game against Virginia Tech next Saturday.

While the Noles dominated the Gators, 31-7, in Tallahassee, Maryland was beating North Carolina State to give FSU a pass to the championship game in Charlotte next week.

One wag summed things up this way: Now UF fans can go back to talking about academics.

Allen West, No George Washington Maybe, But Still Out There Slinging It

In Politico's "Open Mike, Thanksgiving Weekend Edition," Democratic media consultant Peter Fenn takes after Congressman-elect Allen West of Florida with something of a passive-aggressive flourish.

What, you ask, has the controversial Broward County Republican and tea-party darling done now?

For Tottering States, Bankruptcy Could Be the Answer

November 26, 2010 - 6:00pm

We won't be able to say we weren't warned. Continued huge federal budget deficits will eventually mean huge increases in government borrowing costs, Erskine Bowles, co-chairman of Barack Obama's deficit reduction commission, predicted this month. "The markets will come. They will be swift, and they will be severe, and this country will never be the same."

Outrage Over Removal of Indian Remains Halts Everglades Restoration

It was one thing to agree to an exhumation and removal of Native American remains -- mostly bits of teeth and bones. They were supposed to be relocated respectfully, in all dignity, in a site safely away from the Everglades restoration works, south of Lake Okeechobee.

That was according to an agreement made in 2008 between the government and the Miccousukee and Seminole tribes.
