The 2018 legislative session will continue on past Friday and the normal 60 days -- for however long it will take to pass a new $87 billion budget. Lawmakers failed to beat the Tuesday deadline -- last day before a 72-hour cooling-off period was set to begin. The new fiscal year begins July 1.

School Safety Bill Passes after Emotional Debate

Three weeks after Nikolas Cruz gunned down 14 students and three faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida lawmakers Wednesday passed a sweeping school-safety bill that sparked bipartisan and racial divisions over gun issues.

The House in a 67-50 vote approved the proposal (SB 7026), after the fathers of two slain students watched hours of floor debate from the House gallery. The Senate had earlier passed the measure, which now goes to Gov. Rick Scott.

Cruz Formally Indicted on First-Degree Murder Charges

Accused school shooter Nikolas Cruz, 19 -- for the most part held in solitary confinement in a county lock-up since his arrest -- was formally charged Wednesday with 17 counts of first-degree murder. As it stands, he could be sentenced to death if convicted.
