Shane Strum, best known in Florida politics for his service as former Gov. Charlie Crists chief of staff, will be heading into higher education. Strum was named as associate vice chancellor of business development for Keiser University.

Florida Reacts to SB 736 Passing House

Reactions continued to pour in across Florida after the House joined the Senate in passing SB 736, a measure reforming teacher performance pay, on Wednesday afternoon. Gov. Rick Scott is expected to sign the bill into law.

The Florida Gators are as close to a home team as you can get in Rounds One and Two at the only March Madness venue in the Sunshine State. Don't bet against them.

Committee OKs New Gambling Measures

Two measures changing the rules of the game for gambling interests in the state passed the Senate Regulated Industries Committee on Wednesday, potentially kicking off a new round of gambling fights in this year's session.

It's not clear whether the odds are in favor of either bill; Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, was largely ambivalent about both when asked about them Wednesday, and neither bill's House companion has been scheduled for a hearing yet.

Teacher Performance Pay Wins the Day

The Legislature sent its first bill of the year to Gov. Rick Scott Wednesday, when the House joined the Senate in passing the hotly contested SB 736, a measure basing teacher pay on performance and assessments instead of seniority and tenure.

Flanked by legislative leaders at a press conference after the vote was taken, Scott praised the passage of the bill. This will help attract and retain the best teachers, said Scott, adding that it was part of his plan to increase jobs in the Sunshine State.
