Education in the Legislature: Charter Schools Are Next

With teacher merit pay reforms out of the way, the Florida Legislature has turned toward charter school expansion, considering two bills this week that would make it easier for highly-rated charter schools to expand enrollment, add grade levels and grant preferential admittance.

And just like the swiftly-approved teacher merit pay reforms, the push to expand charter schools has the strong backing of Gov. Rick Scott.

Friday Under Wraps? Major Meeting to Save Anti-EPA Water Standards Bill

House members, business leaders, governor's office representatives and Florida Department of Environmental Protection staff were in conference much of early Friday -- not arguing over why the governor won't support HB 239, participants insist, but working to tweak the bill's language so it won't harm the state lawsuit against EPA. The governor's nonsupport was rumored earlier.

Rick Scott Taps Anthony Tatti for Fifth Judicial Circuit

Gov. Rick Scott on Friday announced the appointment of Anthony Tony Tatti, 49, of Ocala to the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court. Tatti will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Stephen O. Rushing.
