Hard Times? Washington, D.C., Real-Estate Bubble Hasn't Burst Yet

Right on cue, a new housing report affirms what Sunshine State News asserted last week: Washington, D.C., resides in a recession-proof bubble.

The D.C. area, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index, was only one of two U.S. metro markets in the nation to post an increase in housing prices in the past year.

Florida Full of April Fool's Day Pranks Both Past and Present

With my passion for the Sunshine States history, it came as no surprise to me that Florida played a prominent role in a list of the 100 greatest April Fools Day pranks assembled by the Museum of Hoaxes. Crazy things seem to happen in Florida, as anyone who remembers the 2000 presidential race can attest.

House Panel OKs PSC Reform, Renewable Energy Bill

A House committee on Tuesday approved a sweeping overhaul of the Public Service Commission aimed at preventing questions about ethics and relationships with regulated utilities that rocked the panel beginning in 2009.

The committee bill (ENUS 11-02) would make several changes to the PSC, including tightening rules against ex parte communications, implementing new education requirements for commissioners and -- in the provision that proved most controversial Tuesday allowing the attorney general to appoint the public counsel.

House Readies Medicaid Reform for the Grand Finale

The Florida House advanced two Medicaid reform bills Tuesday -- HB 7107 and HB 7109 -- setting the stage for a debate and vote later in the week on one of the most pressing issues impacting the Sunshine State.

With a host of worthies -- including Gov. Paul LePage, R-Maine, and Bishop McKinley Young of the AME
Church -- watching the proceedings, Rep. Rob Schenck, R-Spring Hill, the sponsor of the measures, took often-pointed questions from Democrats for the better part of two hours.
