Scott Appoints Atkinson to Judicial Nominating Commission

Gov. Rick Scott has appointed J. Andrew Atkinson to the 2nd Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission.

According to a release from the governors office:

"Atkinson, 38, of Tallahassee, is an attorney at Broad and Cassel.

Previously, he served as assistant general counsel in the executive office of the governor from 2009 to 2011, senior judicial law clerk to Judge Melanie G. May in the 4th District Court of Appeal from 2007 to 2009 and in the office of the attorney general as an assistant attorney general and deputy solicitor general from 2005 to 2007.

Scott Names Kigel to Florida Transportation Commission

Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Beth R. Kigel to the Florida Transportation Commission.

According to a release from the governors office:

"Kigel, 43, of Lake Worth, is the executive vice president of The Goldwater Taplin Group Inc., headquartered in West Palm Beach. She was vice president and governmental consultant of KBS Strategies Group LLC from 2008 through 2011.

The place to be for an insider's look at the GOP presidential debate Monday night was the Media Filing Center & Spin Zone at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

More than 500 reporters, photographers, TV crewmen -- all registered media -- set up shop on the second floor of the Marshall Student Center in the USF ballroom. Caffeine-starved, deadline-minded reporters from all over the country -- all over the globe, in fact -- crowded in together, popping open soda cans, working their stories.

Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, said his ethics bill to prohibit employees of a state college or university from serving in the Legislature is designed in part to eliminate a huge public perception problem.

However, as the bill, SB 1560, narrowly got the support of members of the Rules Subcommittee on Ethics and Elections on Monday, several senators argued for the need to have more diverse backgrounds when deliberating on laws and budget impacts.

Questions Raised About Progress Energy Florida Settlement

An advocacy group raised questions Monday about a wide-ranging settlement agreement that includes Progress Energy Florida continuing to charge customers for a proposed Levy County nuclear-power project.

The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, which said last month that it would challenge such nuclear charges in the Florida Supreme Court, declined to enter the settlement agreement announced Friday by Progress and consumer and business representatives.

State Closes Investigation into Department of Revenue Checks

A Florida Department of Law Enforcement probe into check handling at the Department of Revenue has been closed, with no charges filed.

The FDLE investigation centered on Deon McCrimmon, a tax specialist whose name appeared on several state warrants for payment.

FDLE investigator Mike Stephenson said in a statement:

"Obviously, it would be a concern with the nature in which the warrant payee was shown; the employee may be able to convert the warrant to personal use.

August Primary Move Postponed

With opposition announced from members of both parties, a proposal to change the August primary date -- closer to the Republican National Convention in Tampa and the start of the school year -- has been postponed in the Senate.

Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, announced he would withdraw the bill, SB 1596, so he could address concerns about the one-week change in primary election date.
