Senate Panel Rejects Proposed Slot Restrictions

An effort to prevent the introduction of next-generation slot machines -- which look more like casino games -- at racetracks around the state was shot down in a Senate committee Tuesday, despite fears from regulators that allowing them may put the state at odds with the Seminole Tribe.

The Senate Regulated Industries Committee overwhelmingly rejected the bill, SB 986, which would have prevented the introduction of new multiplayer games at pari-mutuel facilities.

Ron Paul Places Second Behind Mitt Romney in National Poll

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul places second behind Mitt Romney in a Reuters/Ipsos national poll unveiled on Tuesday.

Romney leads with 29 percent, followed by Paul with 21 percent. Newt Gingrich edges Rick Santorum for third, taking 19 percent, with Santorum right on his heels at 18 percent.

The poll of 405 Republicans was taken Feb. 2-6 and had a margin of error of 4.9 percent.

Almost every other national poll shows Romney in first, followed by Gingrich and Santorum while Paul places fourth.

With B+ Report Card, Have Florida Schools 'Hit a Wall'?

A new national study provides more evidence that school improvements may have stalled in Florida -- yet the overall grade appears to be incomplete.

After a decade leading scholastic reform, the Sunshine State lost ground on the 2011 Education Performance and Policy Index compiled by the American Legislative Exchange Council.

While Florida received an overall grade of B+ (the same as last year), it registered declines or static performance in several areas:

Floridas much-traveled governor is expected to focus on Asia for at least one trade mission in 2013.

With trade missions to Spain and Colombia, along with a summer trade exhibition planned for England in the works for this year, Gov. Rick Scott may be the states first governor to visit Japan and South Korea since former Gov. Lawton Chiles in 1997.
