Rick Scott and Ann Scott Announce School Wellness Video Challenge

Gov. Rick Scott and first lady Ann Scott have announced a Wellness Challenge that seeks to recognize physical education teachers.

Public and private schools are invited to submit short videos, up to 10 minutes, that show fitness and nutrition practices, with the winners -- two will be named for elementary, middle and high school levels -- each receiving $2,500 for fitness equipment.

Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, said Friday hes open to returning in a special session if the states low-cost auto coverage isnt resolved by the end of next week, when the regular session is scheduled to end.

The House and Senate are advancing vastly different bills to meet Gov. Rick Scotts goal to reform the fraud that has become a major part of the cost of the personal injury protection insurance.

No-Fault Insurance Reform Poised for House Vote

The House took up its proposal to revamp Florida's no-fault auto insurance market on Thursday, setting the stage for an upcoming showdown with a dissimilar Senate proposal over how to lower costs.

Following a flurry of amendments that made relatively minor changes, the House gave preliminary approval to HB 119, which backers say is needed to reduce fraud in an industry that is costing policyholders $1 billion a year in additional premiums.

Putnam's Energy Plan Given Spark of Life as Session Enters Final Phase

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnams light energy package retained a spark of life Thursday as a bill was advanced, after some last-minute tweaking, to the Senate floor despite the powerful Budget Committee chairman still having questions about the plan.

While it's considered a more realistic proposal than prior energy efforts that have failed to advance through the Legislature or have seen little implementation due to overambitious aims, Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales said he wanted to give the complicated bill, SB 2094, more time to be worked on.

Kirk Fordham Quits Everglades Foundation for Gill Action in Colo.

Kirk Fordham, CEO and the human face of the Everglades Foundation since 2008, has resigned to become executive director of Gill Action, a Colorado-based organization that provides funding for pro-gay political campaigns across the nation. It's a job that starts April 16.

Billionaire founder of the organization Paul Tudor Jones will lead the search for a replacement for Fordham.

Connie Mack Rips Bill Nelson for Birth-Control Amendment

Republican Senate hopeful U.S. Rep. Connie Mack took aim at Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson for voting against the Blunt amendment that would have permitted employers to refuse to cover health-care costs contrary to their religious beliefs -- mainly birth-control and abortion-inducing drugs. The amendment went down on a 51-48 vote.

No Gas Pains for Obama Energy Chief: Lower Prices Still Not a Priority

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee jumped on Rep. Allen West for not supporting a year-old gasoline "price-gouging" bill. Energy Secretary Steven Chu apparently doesn't care.

"In the face of rising gas prices, Representative Allen West and his Grand Oil Party just voted against considering the Federal Price Gouging Prevention Act, which would empower the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general to penalize fuel price gouging," a snarky DCCC press release stated..

Attn. Florida: CAIR Releases 'Tool Kit' to Fight 'Anti-Sharia' Laws

The Council on American-Islamic Relations released a "community tool kit" designed to counter "anti-Sharia" bills introduced in more than 20 states.

CAIR said its "Securing Religious Liberty" tool kit includes "lessons learned from opposing anti-Muslim legislative efforts in Oklahoma, Tennessee and Michigan, an explanation of the legal impact of the discriminatory bills and a discussion of what Sharia is and what it is not."
