Bryan Nelson Backs Bob Cortes to Take on Karen Castor Dentel

The Republican leadership in Tallahassee continues to rally behind Bob Cortes to challenge Rep. Karen Castor Dentel, D-Maitland. On Wednesday, Rep. Bryan Nelson, R-Apopka, endorsed Cortes over Scott Sturgill for the Republican nomination to take on Castor Dentel in 2014. Nelson joins a host of Republican legislators -- including House Majority Leader Steve Precourt, R-Orlando -- in backing Cortes.

Federal Appeals Court: Some State Employees Can Be Drug Tested, Others Can't

In a unanimous decision, theU.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has overturned the decision of a federal trial court that declared unconstitutional Florida Gov. Rick Scott's decision to drug test all 85,000 state workers employed by agencies under his control, and all applicants to those positions.

The three-judge panel agreed that it was unconstitutional to test all of those employees, but said there could be good reason to test occupants of, and applicants for, certain "safety- sensitive positions."

Rick Scott Showcases APD Funding in Jacksonville

In recent days, Gov. Rick Scott has been doing events around the state to showcase parts of the budget he signed earlier this month. On Wednesday, Scott hit the First Coast to highlight $36 million going toward the Agency for Persons with Disabilities' (APD) waiver waiting list. The agencys total budget stands at $1.1 billion.

Florida Colleges Lead National Manufacturing List

On Wednesday, the Manufacturing Institute recognized 11 members of the Florida College System (FCS) for making the M-list which the organization defines as high schools, community colleges, technical centers and universities that organize coursework around industry standards. Florida has more schools on the M-list than any other state. One of Gov. Rick Scotts top priorities in the recent legislative session was to eliminate the manufacturing sales tax which proponents insist will help grow that industry.

Adam Putnam Provides Tips to Prepare for Hurricane Season

With hurricane season beginning on Saturday, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam is offering tips on how to best prepare for emergencies.

The best defense against a hurricane is preparation, said Putnam on Wednesday. As the 2013 hurricane season begins, take the time to gather supplies and map out a plan.
