Is Joe Biden the Real Target of the Ukraine Scandal?

The more the establishment media and the Democrats talk about the Ukraine and the president’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the more the spotlight falls on Joe Biden’s ne’er-do-well son Hunter and Biden’s self-acknowledged corrupt intervention on his behalf.

As Erielle Davidson wrote for The Federalist:

"... we do know that Joe Biden, while serving as vice president, pressured the Ukrainian government to fire the prosecutor who was investigating his son’s company. Hunter Biden joined the board of Ukrainian national gas company Burisma in 2014 while his father was managing the United States’ Ukraine policy and despite zero personal experience in the field. At the time Hunter Biden joined its board, Burisma was embroiled in allegations of corruption, allegations serious enough that Ukraine’s prosecutor general launched an investigation into the company.

"Joe Biden was so proud of his role in the prosecutor’s removal from investigating the company paying his son $50,000 per month merely to serve on its board that he actually bragged about it in a 2018 speech at an event for the publication Foreign Affairs. In this speech, Biden boasts his threat to withhold $1 billion in U.S. loans from Ukraine if they did not agree to fire the prosecutor who happened to be investigating the company giving his son a cushy sinecure.

"The prosecutor was fired, and the investigation was dropped six months later. While the investigation was just reopened last year, it has been a slow-moving process that has turned up little. At the time Biden pushed for the firing of Viktor Shokin, the prosecutor general, Shokin had plans to question Hunter Biden."

You can watch Biden take credit for getting the prosecutor fired through this link.

That’s the kind of “Yeh, I shot him” moment that prosecutors live for.

So, the obvious question is cui bono? Who benefits from airing the scandal if it also hurts Biden?

And the obvious answer is Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

A Des Moines-Register/CNN poll in Iowa released on Saturday and reported by Vanity Fair's Tina Nguyen saw Warren pull ahead of Biden significantly for the first time; she’s now beating him 22 percent to 20 percent.

And most importantly, according to pollster J. Ann Selzer, 32 percent of voters there say they’re “extremely enthusiastic” about caucusing for Warren, while only 22 percent say the same about Biden. “Biden’s favorability dropped, his unfavorable numbers doubled,” she noted. “In the absence of any context, it’s not bad. But Elizabeth Warren’s numbers are strikingly good.”

While Biden’s gaffes aren’t helping him, the past two weeks haven’t been an especially gaffe-prone period for the former VP, but they have seen a steady airing of articles and TV segments about his problematic son Hunter cashing in on old Dad’s position and that is very likely what is driving down Biden’s poll numbers.

The problem for the Biden team is that Trump isn’t the only player or maybe even the most important player on the field opposed to them, and every time the words Biden and corruption and Ukraine appear in the same sentence, Elizabeth Warren looks that much better.

Ms. Nguyen reported that the Biden camp seems to have concluded that the best way to limit the fallout from Hunter’s time on the board of the Ukrainian natural gas company at the center of the corruption probe is to get ahead of the story, paint the whole thing as a fringe conspiracy, and launch a series of counterattacks before the president’s narrative (and the facts) pick up steam.

However, Leftwing news outlets are not ignoring the story. The New York Times’ Ken Vogul told the MSNBC audience that Ukraine is a “significant liability” for Biden and in response the Biden campaign went to the trouble of producing a video rebutting Vogul's article and his assertions on the network of choice for woke Democrat primary voters.

But a video rebuttal may not be enough to stave off the circling vultures. In interviews The Daily Beast conducted with multiple progressive Democrats and Warren supporters, their chief advice to Warren was don’t rush to Biden’s defense against Trump. In other words, they’re hoping Trump and the Ukraine scandal take out Biden and they are happy to let Biden dangle in the breeze, as long as no one blames the Warren team for kicking the chair out from under him.
