Judge Sides with Charter Schools in Safety Fight

In a decision that could have statewide implications, an administrative law judge Tuesday ruled that the Palm Beach County School Board is required to assign safety officers to charter schools under a law passed last year.

Judge John Van Laningham sided with Renaissance Charter School Inc., which operates six schools in Palm Beach County and wanted the School Board to provide “safe school” officers. The School Board refused, leading to the legal battle.

DeSantis Drug Importation Plan Wins House Support

Gov. Ron DeSantis was criticized last year for not having a health care platform while he campaigned for the state’s top job.

But DeSantis’ recent announcement that he wants the state to begin importing drugs from Canada is getting praise from Florida lawmakers.

Members of the House Health Quality Subcommittee on Tuesday voted 15-2 to approve a bill (HB 19) that would help carry out DeSantis’ plan.

Miami may have more experience hosting Super Bowls and other major national events, but it was Milwaukee chosen Monday to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

"I'm grateful for every finalist city for being a part of this process with us," tweeted Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, "now let's get ready for 2020." He was talking specifically about Milwaukee's glitzier rivals, Miami and Houston.

North Florida Congressmen Want to Make Things Easier When Veterans Transition to Civilian Workforce

Two North Florida congressmen--Republican U.S. Rep. John Rutherford and Democrat U.S. Rep. Al Lawson--brought back a proposal to help veterans transition out of the service and into the civilian sector. 

Back in October 2017, Rutherford and Lawson unveiled a bill creating a grant matching program for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to support organizations that help veterans enter the private sector through job training programs and other training to help them enter the civilian workforce. While the bill cleared the House, it failed to pass the Senate. 

With DeSantis Urging Cooperation with ICE, Florida Sheriffs Are Looking at Options

Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing more Florida sheriffs to cooperate with the federal government to keep potentially deportable criminals behind bars until they’re handed off to immigration agents.

Following the governor’s lead, the state Senate is moving forward with a proposal that would require state and local law-enforcement agencies to “use best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration law.”

'Fracking' Ban Advances amid Concerns

A move to ban “fracking” in Florida advanced Monday in the Senate with some oil-drilling protections for the Everglades, but not more comprehensive language sought by environmentalists.

The Senate Agriculture Committee voted 3-2 along party lines to approve a measure (SPB 7064) by Chairman Ben Albritton that would meet Gov. Ron DeSantis’ call to ban hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which involves injecting large volumes of fluids into rock formations at a “high rate” of pressure to help release natural gas and oil.

Ron DeSantis Starts in Tallahassee With Unemployment Rate at 3.4 Percent

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the unemployment rate in Florida fell to 3.4 percent in January. It had been 3.5 percent in December, the last full month that Gov. Rick Scott held office in Tallahassee. DeSantis took over at the start of the second week in January. 

DeSantis showcased the state outpaced the nation when it came to job growth in the past. While the nation saw 2.1 percent job growth last year, Florida saw 2.7 percent job growth.

Gov. Ron DeSantis could be on the verge of getting his first major legislative victory.

The House is expected during the coming week to approve a bill that would allow patients to smoke medical marijuana, a proposal that has already passed the Senate.

Voters in 2016 passed a constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana. Lawmakers in 2017 approved a bill to carry out the constitutional amendment and included a ban on smokable marijuana.
