FDOT Will Fence Alligator Alley Stretch Deadly to Panthers

The Florida Department of Transportation has agreed to install wildlife exclusionary fencing along what is called the deadliest stretch of road for Florida panthers -- the nine miles of Alligator Alley from the FakaUnion Canal Bridge to the Naples toll booth.

South Florida emerged Wednesday as the final barrier to an agreement between legislative leaders about a redistricting plan for the state Senate, even as resistance to other parts of a House-passed map raised questions about whether a majority of senators could be persuaded to back the proposal.

An evening negotiating session between House Redistricting Chairman Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes, and Senate Reapportionment Chairman Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, didn't produce an immediate compromise on a plan to redraw lines for the Senate's 40 seats.

On Tuesday, the U.S. House passed without opposition a measure condemning the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Europe and urging the federal government to work with other countries and Jewish groups to fight against it. 

Two members of the Florida delegation--Republican U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Democrat U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch--were original co-sponsors of U.S. Rep. Chris Smith’s, R-NJ, resolution. Smith and the two Florida representatives are co-chairs of the Bipartisan Taskforce for Combating Anti-Semitism.
