Agreement Grows on Clarity for 'Stand Your Ground'

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

While there's no consensus on whether the state's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law may apply in the Trayvon Martin case, and not everyone agrees on whether it's bad or good law, a consensus is emerging that it may not be as clear as it could be as to what it allows and doesn't.

As the 2005 law has come under intense scrutiny in the wake of the Sanford shooting of the unarmed 17-year-old Martin in February, veteran lawmakers haven't been able to agree even on what the measure allows --which, the bill's sponsor acknowledges, may point to a need for clarification.

Highway Bill Impasse Imperils Projects, But Gas Tax Would Lapse

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

Another Capitol Hill showdown threatens to shut down the Highway Trust Fund on Saturday, halting billions of dollars worth of road projects.

On the positive side, motorists could see an immediate 18-cent reduction at the pump if the federal gasoline tax expires, too.

A two-year, $109 billion funding measure approved by the Senate is going nowhere in the House, but the House has not been able to pass its own plan.

Unless lawmakers come to an agreement, the current highway funding program will expire at midnight Saturday.

Jobs Legislation Seeks More Positive Atmosphere for Business in Florida

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

Gov. Rick Scott signed a quartet of bills Wednesday that were part of his jobs-creation package that is as much about crafting a positive perception for the business community as it is about providing tax breaks and reducing regulation.

There is not a single bill that we can pass that will drive unemployment to zero, but we can create an environment that sends a signal of stability and predictability to job creators so they can continue Floridas economic recovery, said House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park.

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

Two polls unveiled on Wednesday find President Barack Obama ahead of the two leading Republican hopefuls -- former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania -- in the swing state of Ohio.

With 18 Electoral College votes on the line in the Buckeye State in November, Ohio is a crucial state for any Republican presidential nominee -- in fact, no GOP presidential candidate has ever won the White House without carrying Ohio.

Mitt Romney Putting Up a Fight in Rick Santorum's Pennsylvania

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

There are signs this week that Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is taking the fight to GOP rival Rick Santorum in his own backyard -- delegate-rich Pennsylvania. The Keystone State, which will bring 72 delegates to the Republican convention in Tampa come August, holds its primary on April 24 along with four other states in the region -- Connecticut, Delaware, New York and Rhode Island.

Apples, Oranges and Zebras, Oh My!

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

WASHINGTON -- By now you've heard it plenty: The Affordable Care Act (ACA), aka "Obamacare," is like the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This creative bit of dot-connecting began with President Obama, and has been perpetuated by countless talk-show hosts and their guests.

FPL Gets Go-Ahead for Port Everglades Plant

March 27, 2012 - 6:00pm

State regulators Tuesday unanimously approved Florida Power & Light's proposal to build a nearly $1.2 billion power plant in Broward County, saying it is the best way to meet the utility's future needs.

The project would replace four idled, 1960s-era generating units at the Port Everglades complex and would start cranking out electricity in 2016. FPL argued that the new plant, primarily fueled by natural gas, would be more efficient and would help provide power to the utility's huge South Florida customer base.

Hispanic Lines in South Florida Could Trip up Senate Map

March 26, 2012 - 6:00pm

Florida House leadership believes the Senate map will pass muster in the Florida Supreme Court, but a Justice Department review -- now that might be a tougher sell.

The House on Tuesday, as expected, approved the Senates second effort to create a map based on the less-than-2-year-old Fair Districts Amendments.
