Controversial funding for a new university in Lakeland championed by the Lake Wales Republican is not on the annual "turkey" list compiled by Florida TaxWatch. This year, the group is seeking line-item vetoes from the governor for 143 projects worth $150.6 million, ranging from the Brevard Community College Public Safety Institute to a land purchase next to the governors mansion and a Bay of Pigs Museum in Miami..

New Marlins Ballpark Helps Grapefruit League Set Per-Game Attendance Mark

Bolstered by games played at the Miami Marlins' new ballpark, the Grapefruit League reported record-setting attendance this spring.

The 233 exhibition games played by Major League Baseball teams in Florida this year had a combined attendance of 1,622,957, or 6,965 per game, up from the previous record of 6,640 in 2010.

Standing up to special pleaders at City Hall is good practice for Capitol Hill, says Richard Clark, a Republican candidate in Florida's 6th Congressional District.

"I've been fighting fees and taxes the whole way," says the seven-year councilman from Jacksonville.

"A lot of people, including Republicans, wanted us to put more money in the system. You have to be really strong because they come from all sides," Clark told Sunshine State News in an interview.

Counties Go to Court to Fight State Medicaid Billing

In what it described as an "accounting mess,'' the Florida Association of Counties said Thursday it will file a lawsuit challenging the state's decision to try to tap counties for tens of millions of dollars in disputed Medicaid money.

The decision came two weeks after Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill that calls for the state to recoup the money -- and more than a month after counties frantically tried to fend off the measure in the Legislature.

In Sunshine State, Wind Generating Jobs, Not Power ... Yet

Florida remains in the doldrums when it comes to generating wind power, but the wind industry is producing more jobs in the state, a national report shows.

The American Wind Energy Association reported Thursday that the Sunshine State is home to 15 plants manufacturing wind-power components for use elsewhere.

The facilities range from GE Energy's turbine manufacturing plant in Pensacola to Atlantic Bearings' power-transmission parts supplier in Doral.

A 16th company, turbine maker 5D, is set to crank up an assembly plant in Sarasota this year.

Delaware takes pride in being the first state to ratify the Constitution -- but the Blue Hen State has been the last state for Republican presidential hopefuls before and it could be shaping up to put the nail in the coffin of Newt Gingrichs presidential bid.

While it is not expected to be competitive in November(with Delawares own Joe Biden as his running mate, Barack Obama took 63 percent there in 2008), Gingrich has targeted the Blue Hen State, which holds its primary April 24 along with four other states in the region: Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
