Rick Scott to Tampa: I Won't Ban Guns Outside GOP Convention

Gov. Rick Scott shot down a request by Tampa City Council members to alter the states gun law for the city downtown when the Republican National Convention comes to town this August.

While the city has the ability on its own to temporarily ban water guns, sticks and poles, Scott stated that firearm possession is covered by Article I, Section 8 of the Florida Constitution and the Second Amendment.

A controversial Progress Energy Florida project to build two nuclear reactors in Levy County will not start producing electricity until 2024 -- and likely will cost between $19 billion and $24 billion, the company said Tuesday.

Progress released the information as it notified state regulators that it will seek to collect $151.7 million from customers in 2013 to pay for work on the Levy County project and for upgrades at an existing nuclear plant at Crystal River.

Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation Tuesday designed to punish companies that do business with Cuba or Syria.Both nations are on the U.S. State Department list of state sponsors of terrorism.

For a symbolic flourish, Scott signed the bill, House Bill 959, in the Freedom Tower in Miami, a building that once served as a processing center by the federal government for refugees fleeing Fidel Castros communist regime.
