Why NASCAR Should Be Designated Florida's Official Sport

As Ernest Hemingway once put it, there are only three true sports, because they involve the very real risk of dying in the process: mountain climbing, bull fighting and auto racing.

The House State Affairs Committee today is discussing a bill to make auto racing the official sport of Florida. And if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.

Mountain climbing is out in our topographically challenged peninsular state. Bull fighting would be a nonstarter -- systematic slaughter of animals really doesn't play well in the United States.

And is there a more conservative sport than auto racing? All drivers start on an equal basis, decisions have consequences, and skill and brains -- driver to driver -- are the deciding factors in victory.

Besides, where else but a NASCAR race can you find a crowd of more than 100,000 largely inebriated people who are all so darn polite (possibly because they take the Second Amendment seriously)?

In the House, it's HB 745. In the Senate, it's SB 266. Contact your lawmaker today!
