Who are Florida's top 10 largest private landowners?

Encompassing 5,000 square miles, roughly a tenth of Floridas land is privately held by 10 entities, reports Florida Trend magazine. Six of the 10 companies are based in Florida.

Stretching the length of the state, the list includes:

1. Plum Creek Timber 590,000 acres.
2. St. Joe Co. 576,000 acres.
3. Foley Timber 562,000 acres.
4. Rayonier 401,000 acres.
5. Lykes Bros. 337,000 acres.
6. Deseret Ranches 290,000 acres.
7. Mosaic 254,000 acres.
8. Bascom Southern 194,000 acres.
9. Florida Crystals 155,000 acres.
10. U.S. Sugar 153,000 acres.

Florida Trend reporter Cynthia Barnett says: The large, privately owned swaths are vital to Florida's future -- from their environmental importance for protecting the state's freshwater resources and wildlife habitats to their economic significance for preserving agriculture and developing new business sectors.
