What's in a Name? Ask Ohio Democrat Will Smith
This is my nomination for the best political story of the year sofar.
According to a USA Today Electionline story Friday, Democratic primary voters in Ohios 2nd Congressional District -- along the Kentucky border -- nominated a man named William Smith as their standard-bearer in Novembers election.
Routine stuff, right?
Not quite.
The thing is, no seems to know exactly who William Smith is.
Hes never been seen in public. Hes never given a speech. His campaign doesnt have a website. In fact, as far as anyone knows, he never campaigned at all.
He won, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, by 59 votes out of more than 20,000 votes cast, defeatingan opponent named David Krikorian.
Ive never seen him. I dont know him, he told the paper, blaming the outcome on a super-PAC he suspects of paying for calls to voters on Smith and other Democratic candidates.
Smith is alive, though, according to a USA Today update posted Friday evening. Hes a 61-year-old truck driver who lives with his mother in small-town Waverly, Ohio.
While it might be some comfort to know he lost to an actual person, Krikorian had to be crushed.
I mean, how would you like being beat by such a political nobody?
