Watch Out! Obama in State of the Union Address: I Want to Spend More

President Barack Obama apparently has no intention of listening to 2010's victorious Republicans in Congress who continue to call for dramatic budget cuts.

A story in Saturday's Wall Street Journal by Damian Paletta, Jonathan Weisman and Laura Meckler reports Obama is going to drop a spending-spree bombshell on the American public in Tuesday night's State of the Union address.

"Mr. Obama will argue that the U.S., even while trying to reduce its budget deficit, must make targeted investments to foster job growth and boost U.S. competitiveness in the world economy.

"The new spending could include initiatives aimed at building the renewable-energy sector -- which received billions of dollars in stimulus funding -- and rebuilding roads to improve transportation, people familiar with the matter said. Money to restructure the No Child Left Behind law's testing mandates and institute more competitive grants also could be included."

The story claims the president will introduce budget cuts as well, but nowhere near enough to counteract the money he wants to lash out.

Republicans, meanwhile, are trying to get the nation's attention, explaining that the combination of a surge in federal spending and a $1.3 trillion budget deficit impede job creation. Deep spending cuts are needed immediately, they say.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Obama policies have done incalculable damage to the business climate over the last two years -- to job creation and the exploding national debt -- creating good public relations for the White House, not good jobs for struggling Americans.
