Vern Buchanan Wants Solution, No Congressional Pay in Shutdown

With the federal shutdown on hand, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., called Washington broken and urged the passage of a bill cutting off congressional salaries during the shutdown.

The failure by both parties and the White House to reach agreement and avoid a shutdown is yet another example of why Washington is broken, Buchanan said on Tuesday. Its time to put aside the partisanship and do whats in the best interest of the country.

Buchanan plans not to accept congressional pay during the shutdown and pointed to a bill he is co-sponsoring which would end salaries for senators and congressmen during the shutdown.

No small business would pay someone who refuses to do their job, Buchanan said. So why should senators or House members be paid for failing to fulfill one of their most basic responsibilities? They shouldnt.

Buchanan had an idea on how to quickly resolve the shutdown.

Sometimes the best solution is to get all parties together, lock em in a room and not leave until a deal gets done, Buchanan said.
