Vern Buchanan Calls on Senate to End Filibuster on Iran Deal

Appearing on CSPAN radio on Thursday, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., urged U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to kill the filibuster and ensure a vote can be held against President Barack Obama’s deal with Iran over its nuclear program.

Vern Buchanan“I think this is the tipping point,” Buchanan said. “I’d like to see the Senate majority leader get rid of the filibuster completely...the dysfunction in Washington has people outraged. It might have made sense in the past but it doesn’t make sense today.”

Earlier in the week, Buchanan wrote McConnell on the topic, urging him to use the “nuclear option” against the filibuster.

“The Senate’s refusal to debate or vote on the most important nuclear arms agreement in decades is appalling and a national embarrassment,” Buchanan wrote. “National security is too important to be held hostage by partisan obstructionists who won’t even allow a debate on the issue. It’s time to play hardball and break the filibuster – too much is at stake.”
