U.S. Misses Out on 2022 World Cup Bid

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, has named Qatar, the small Middle Eastern nation, as its site to host the 2022 World Cup. The U.S. was one of three other bids to host the tournament, but misses out despite the lobbying of former President Bill Clinton and American star of the 2010 World Cup, Landon Donovan.

Russia was earlier named as the host of the 2018 World Cup, with bids from England and joint bids from Spain and Portugal, and Netherlands and Belgium getting the snub. A joint bid from Japan and South Korea, and another bid from Australia missed out on the 2022 tournament.

It will be the first time the World Cup will be hosted in a Middle Eastern country. Qatar has never played in the World Cup.

Tampa had hoped to be named as a venue for 2022 if the U.S. bid was successful.
