United for Care Urging Sign-ups for Medical Marijuana Petition
United for Care, a campaign run by People United for Medical Marijuana, is urging members of the public to sign their names on the petition to put medical marijuana on the 2014 ballot in Florida.
In an email sent Friday, the camp said:
"With the holidays right around the corner, we are rapidly approaching our January deadline to collect enough signatures to put medical marijuana on the 2014 ballot in Florida. Supervisors of elections must validate all signatures before Feb. 5th, so it is imperative that we submit our petitions early enough for them to be validated."
People United also urged those who had already signed to get their entire household to sign the petition as well. The group needs about 683,149 total Florida registered-voter signatures by Feb. 1 to get the amendment on the ballot. If it gets on the ballot, it then must get at least 60 percent of the votes to be adopted.
The issue has sparked debate among Florida legislators, who are pushing back against the proposed amendment, calling it too broad and expressing concerns that marijuana shops could open up on "every street corner" in the state.
The Florida Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and People United on Dec. 5.
