United For Care Gathers 1.1 Million Signatures for Marijuana Petition
United for Care reached 1.1 million signatures in its petition to get medical marijuana on the ballot for November on Thursday night, according to the group's Facebook page.
The post thanks the "thousands of donors" who contributed to the cause, including Orlando-based trial lawyer John Morgan, who recently poured $2.8 million into the effort.
"Literally thousands of volunteers contributed their time, collecting petitions in the rain and heat, on their weekends and holidays," read the post. "This is an enormous achievement -- but even though we still await the ruling of the state Supreme Court, we need to get right back to work. We must shift this now into campaign mode =- and help educate the millions of Florida voters who will hopefully be allowed to have a choice in November."
The group would need to collect over 683,000 verified signatures to get the measure on the ballot. As of Thursday evening, 457,575 signatures had been submitted.
But even if the group does collect the required amount of signatures, the Florida Supreme Court would still need to rule on whether the ballot language is legal or not. The court is expected to make a decision before the beginning of April.
