Uncle Luke Changes Tune in Miami-Dade and Plays for Robaina

A day after he was expected to endorse Miami-Dade mayoral candidate Carlos Gimenez, ex-rapper Luther Campbell announced his support for Julio Robaina.

The apparent flip brought an immediate rebuke from Gimenez, who said, It is disappointing that Mr. Campbell would change course following our conversations and his indications earlier this week.

Mr. Campbell and I had a frank discussion and agreed we were on the same page as to creating jobs and making community redevelopment agencies accountable to the communities they serve. However, I was not willing to do certain things that Mr. Campbell was asking," Gimenez said in a statement.

Gimenez did not divulge those "certain things," but he blasted Robaina, who, he said, "made Mr. Campbell an offer he couldn't refuse.

Campbell's endorsement could swing the election for Robaina, who captured 34 percent in the first round of voting last month. Campbell garnered 11 percent of the vote in last month's election and has a loyal following among African-Americans.

Gimenez, who received 29 percent of the vote in the initial round, picked up the endorsement of Marcelo Llorente, who received nearly 15 percent of the vote.

Last month, Campbell accused Robaina of paying off black candidates Wilbur Bell and Roosevelt Bradley -- an allegation that was denied all around.

The runoff is June 28.
