Trey Radel's Brother-in-Law's Been Arrested for Cocaine, Too

The brother-in-law of U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fla., who took a leave of absence from Congress after pleading guilty to cocaine possession, also has a history of cocaine possession, according to Lee County court records.

Eric Wegmann, Radel's brother-in-law,was arrested in October 2003 for felony cocaine possession. According to court records, Wegmann initially pleaded not guilty, but he later completed a six-month pretrial diversion program and the judge choose not to pursue charges against him.

It is unfortunate that the congressmans wifes family is not considered out of bounds, said a Radel spokesman in an email to the Florida Times-Union.

Radel's office denied that the Fort Myers congressman had ever done illegal drugs with Wegmann, if he had brought drugs into his office or any federal building, or if he had ever drank alcohol with Wegmann.

Absolutely not, the spokesman's email read to the Times-Union.

Radel held a press conference Thursday after completing rehab for alcohol abuse. He said he would not be resigning from Congress, although many have called for his resignation. Lenny Curry, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, called for Radel's resignation at the end of November.

Radel, however, said drugs and alcohol did not impact his official duties to serve in Congress, but he is facing an ethics probe from the House Ethics Committee.

This was my personal issue on personal time," said Radel.
