Tim Mahoney, Former Congressman, Charged With DUI

Multimillionaire former Congressman Tim Mahoney was arrested and charged with DUI early Saturday morning. He spent the rest of the night in the Palm Beach County Jail.

According to a story Sunday in Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, a police officer found Mahoney, 53, asleep behind the wheel of his car at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday. Under the law, a DUI charge can be filed even if a car isnt moving as long as the driver has actual physical control over the vehicle.

I havent had a chance to talk to my attorney. I plan to plead innocent because I made a conscious decision not to drive last night, Mahoney told the Scripps reporter after his release. He left the jail in a taxi.

Democrat Mahoney defeated Joe Negron to win the 16th Congressional District seat in 2006, after Republican Mark Foley vacated it in a sexting scandal just before the election. But Mahoney lasted only one term, implicated in two extramarital affairs, one with a staff member, the other with a Martin County employee. He was defeated by the current District 16 seat holder, Republican Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta.
