Texas A&M Bolts and Sets up a (Dysfunctional) Florida State-SEC Marriage; Gators Grumble
The Florida State-SEC rumor mill cranked up again Thursday after Texas A&M announced it was leaving the Big 12 Conference.
The Aggies finally have had enough of the University of Texas, and the Southeastern Conference will likely pick them up, establishing a rich recruiting beach head in the Lone Star State.
With an odd 13 schools, the SEC would look to round up that number by adding a team from another conference, and the ACC appears to be the logical poaching ground.
Virginia Tech and Clemson have categorically denied interest. FSU has been less dogmatic.
While FSU would gain prestige in the move, it wouldn't help, and might hurt, the Florida Gators. The two schools already play each other every year, but UF would lose its SEC recruiting monopoly in the state.
Ultimately, that arrangement could set up the same kind of unhealthy relationship that led to the A&M-Texas breakup.
Stay tuned.
