In-State Tuition Bill Heads to Rick Scott
A bill to offer in-state tuition rates to the children of undocumented immigrants passed through the Florida House on Friday, its last stop before heading to Gov. Rick Scott for signing.
HB 851, sponsored byRep. Jeanette Nuz, R-Miami,passed by a vote of 84-32.
The passage would make Florida the 21st state to offer in-state tuition rates for Dreamers and the bill would cost Florida colleges and universities around $49 million.
The bill will now head to Scott's desk for signing. The governor hopped on board with the legislation partially because the bill would prevent Florida universities from raising tuition rates above those set by the Florida Legislature. Scottwas present in the House following the bill's passage and said Thursday he would sign the bill.
