St. Johns County Ranked Top School District in Florida
St. Johns County, followed by Santa Rosa, Martin, Sarasota and Gilchrist counties, topped the list of the state's 67 school districts, according to the Florida Department of Education.
The numerical ranking is based on each districts total points derived from FCAT scores.
Madison County stood at the bottom of the list, below DeSoto, Hamilton and Jefferson counties.
I applaud (Florida Education) Commissioner (Gerard) Robinson on these rankings. We all wish to ensure students have the opportunity to get a good education that will prepare them for a good job, Gov. Rick Scott stated in a release. Ranking school districts by performance allows taxpayers to see their investment in education at work.
Districts are awarded 1 point for each percent of students in the district who were enrolled for the full year who score on grade level or higher on the FCAT and make annual learning gains (800 possible points). The total is the sum of the percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher for FCAT reading, mathematics, and science; scoring at Level 4 or higher on the FCAT writing essay; the percent of students who made learning gains in reading and mathematics; and for the percent of the lowest 25 percent of students who made learning gains in reading and mathematics.
