Spain Signs Pact to Locate Joint Space Venture in Florida

Space Florida and Spain's aerospace institute have entered into an agreement that will lead to a joint venture company locating in the Sunshine State.

Frank DiBello, head of Space Florida, and Jaime Denis, director general of the Instituto Nacional de Tnica Aeroespacial (INTA), signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday to jointly pursue aerospace ventures.

The agreement calls for formation of a commercial business to develop, manufacture, sell and launch small satellites. In addition to locating the company in Florida, Space Florida commits to securing the earliest available launch opportunities for demonstrating the joint venture's satellite capabilities.

INTA is the Spanish public research organization specializing in aerospace research and technology development. Its main purpose is the acquisition, maintenance and continuous improvement of Spanish technologies that can be applied to the aerospace industry.

INTA has had significant success in recent years building expertise in both nano and pico satellite development and manufacturing, as well as in small satellite applications, DiBello noted.

Spains expertise in small satellite manufacture, delivery and application development, combined with unique Florida-based assets and technology, equates to a powerful partnership that will result in employment as well as increased launch opportunities for Florida.

On Friday, Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll signed a letter of understanding with the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation regarding scientific and technology cooperation between Florida and Spain.

The LOU details an agreement that will provide business development opportunities in areas of common interest, including small satellite technology and space research, biotechnology and genetics in agriculture and food, and issues affecting the aging population.
