Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio Inundated by Debt Calls, E-Mails
Maybe Sen. Bill Nelson's callers like "baby talk."
Dan McLaughlin, spokesman for Florida's Democratic senator, said the deluge of phone calls pouring in to the office today "were mostly supportive of the president's speech" on the national-debt debate.
Barack Obama's Monday night address has been applauded by some as a mature call for a "balanced approach" and derided by others as "baby talk."
McLaughlin said Nelson's office received "a way-above-normal 5,500 e-mails just this morning."
"Most folks seem to appreciate that the president advocated for a balanced solution. But they also just want the matter resolved," McLaughlin reported.
Alex Burgos, spokesman for Sen. Marco Rubio, said the freshman Republican's office also was deluged by constituents today.
"The phones have not stopped ringing here," Burgos said.
The approximately 2,000 incoming calls "roughly split 50-50 between 'keep fighting for a balanced budget/against taxes/stand strong against reckless spending' and 'compromise with the president and raise the debt ceiling,'" Burgos reported.
