Senators Break with Rick Scott to Ask Ray LaHood for More Time for High-Speed Rail Funds

Two thirds of the Senate broke with Gov. Rick Scott and sent a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Thursday asking for more time before re-allocating federal funds targeted for high-speed rail projects to other states.

Please give us the time necessary to work with the enterprise prior to re-allocating Floridas funds to another state, wrote the senators.

With Democratic candidate Oscar Braynon a heavy favorite to take the vacant seat once held by fellow Democrat Frederica Wilson, Scott could be facing 27 senators against him on the issue -- more than enough to override a gubernatorial veto. While a number of Democrats stood against Scott, so did Republican stalwarts, including members of the leadership like Majority Leader Andy Gardiner of Orlando and President Pro Tempore Mike Bennett of Bradenton.
