Senate Wraps Up Short Day on Floor
After hearing from Nigel Sheinwald, the U.K.'s ambassador to the U.S., the Florida Senate got to work, quickly readying several bills for a final floor vote Thursday.
Here are some of the highlights:
SB 1970 -- This bill, originally brought by Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, would exempt some research and authorized project papers of the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability from public records requests, and would apply retroactively.
SB 344 -- The "beastiality bill." It bans sexual conduct with animals and "related activities," making such actions a first-degree misdemeanor.
"This fails in the House every year, and I don't even want to speculate why," said Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Valrico.
SB 228 -- Sen. Gary Siplin's "droopy drawers bill" is moving ahead once again in the Senate, but has usually gotten tied up in the House. The Orlando Democrat's bill would allow school districts to impose stricter dress codes on students.
SB 444 -- State agencies and local governments are barred from contracting with companies on the Scrutinized Companies with Activities in Iran or Scrutinized Companies with Activities in Sudan lists under this bill, brought by Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale.
