Senate Committee to Hear Campus Carry Bill
The Senate Higher Education Committee will hear a bill to allow concealed weapons on college campuses on Tuesday.
SB 68, sponsored by Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, would allow concealed weapons permit holders 21 and older to carry their firearms on college campuses. A similar bill is being sponsored by Sen. Greg Evers, R-Sarasota.
A similar bill was filed last year and easily made its way through the Florida House, but died when it was taken off of a special order calendar in a Senate Committee.
The two bills have sparked a passionate debate between gun control activists and gun rights advocates alike. Supporters of the bill say it's a good idea to keep college campuses safer, but opponents say putting firearms in the hands of college students who are already in a stressful environment is a deadly combination.
